Hobbies to be cultivated in kids during lockdown

Looking back at the life of a school-going child prior to pandemic days, it was just half-sleepy heads being pulled out from bed and made to get ready to school, rushing off to make it to their buses on time.  On reaching school, they had their daily dose of academics and co-curricular activities and some wonderful bonding time with peers.  Then, back to home in the afternoon, completing homework and again, most, if not all, rushing to some classes like music, dance, drawing or sports, the kids were fruitfully engaged the whole day and exhausted to sleep.

The lockdown brought a sudden jerky halt to all of these, leaving the kids with little or no choice than to sit in front of the idiot box or playing games on gadgets for hours.  Frustrations flaring, with some of the parents also being forced to work from home while some others sitting idle with only mundane home chores and ever-enthusiastic kids for company, adjusting to the new routine was difficult for all.

Kids were the ones who were most affected by the pandemic.  The little minds did not know what to do and where to make a start.  Slowly some schools did fill in the void with online classes & activities.

realized the importance of inculcating hobbies in kids during the lockdown period and worked out a regime along with academics and came up with very innovative activities for students of preschool as well as the higher standards, which could be later pursued as hobbies during their free time.

Some of the best hobbies that kids could pursue over the lockdown period are:

  1. Painting.  It is said that colours help heal.  Allow kids to experiment with paper and pencil and some colours for an hour, and they will pour out all their emotions on to them.
  2. Craft.  Making any kind of craft requires planning skills.  It also gives kids a chance to explore their creative skills.
  3. Reading/Writing.  Reading prose or poetry or simply starting to write a daily journal strengthens brain functions and improves the vocabulary.
  4. Cooking.  Improves culinary skills and also teaches greater focus and planning skills.
  5. Singing or learning to play a musical instrument.   Improves mood, improves sleep, and increases lung capacity.
  6. Dancing.  Improves strength and flexibility.  Also, makes the kid physically and mentally active.
  7. Playing board games.   Makes the mind sharp, improves problem solving skills and ability to plan and strategize.

So, with these hobbies, let’s all try to make an effort to make the best out of this lockdown period, especially for our little ones.
